Shiner, TX
Twenty miles up the road sits one of Texas’s most beloved small towns, built on Czech and German heritage and home to the Spoetzl Brewery — the oldest independent brewery in the state. Tour the brewery, grab a plate of BBQ on the grounds, and soak up a little Texas history while you’re at it.
Palmetto State Park
Just 15 miles from River Acres, Palmetto State Park is a genuine hidden gem — tropical vegetation, dwarf palmettos, and wooden boardwalks over wetlands that look nothing like the rest of Central Texas. Right next door, the newly restored Ottine Mineral Springs is fast becoming one of the most talked-about wellness destinations in the state.
New Braunfels, TX
About 40 miles west, New Braunfels delivers Hill Country charm, German heritage, and a historic dance hall that has hosted some of the biggest names in Texas music. Add a riverside meal at the Gristmill and a morning stop at Naegelin’s Bakery and you’ve got yourself a full day.
San Antonio, TX
About an hour west, the Alamo City is a full day out by any measure. Walk the River Walk, spend an afternoon in the Pearl District, and if you can snag a reservation, The Alamo is one of the most unique dining experiences in Texas.
Nixon, TX
Twenty miles east, Nixon is a small Texas town that delivers exactly what it promises — good Tex-Mex, honest BBQ, and a historic downtown with a character all its own. Stop into Main Drug Co. & Gift Shop for a look at one of the best-preserved historic storefronts in the region.
