Things to do while in New Braunfels

Gruene Hall & the Gruene Historic District
Gruene Hall has been hosting live music since the 1870s, making it the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas — and the list of artists who have played its stage reads like a country music hall of fame. George Strait got his start here. Most afternoon shows are free, and the Tuesday night swing dance lessons with Two Tons of Steel have become a local institution. The surrounding Gruene Historic District is compact and walkable, with antique shops, boutiques, and restaurants tucked into well-preserved historic buildings along the Guadalupe River.

Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar
Right next door to Gruene Hall, the Gristmill has been serving Texas classics since 1977 in what was once the boiler room of the Gruene Cotton Mill — a building that’s now on the National Register of Historic Places. The multi-level outdoor patio hangs over the Guadalupe River and is one of the best dining settings in the Hill Country. The menu leans into Texas staples: chicken-fried steak, ribs, fresh catfish, and cold beer. Come hungry.

Naegelin’s Bakery
Naegelin’s has been baking in downtown New Braunfels since 1868, making it one of the oldest continuously operating bakeries in Texas. The menu is rooted in German tradition — strudels, fruit pies, kolaches, and cinnamon rolls that have been made the same way for generations. The bakery closes in the afternoon once the day’s baking sells out, so an early morning stop is worth building into your itinerary. It’s a small, no-frills operation that has earned its reputation entirely on the quality of what comes out of the oven.
