El Rodeo
El Rodeo is Nixon’s go-to for Tex-Mex, and it earns that reputation with straightforward, well-executed classics including enchiladas, fajitas, tacos, and cold margaritas served in a colorful, unpretentious dining room. The flour tortillas are made in-house and have developed their own following among regulars who make the drive specifically for them. It’s a local favorite that has held its ground as a community staple.
Main Drug Co. & Gift Shop
Main Drug Co. has been a Nixon institution since 1964, housed in one of the most striking historic brick buildings in town. The building itself is worth the stop — the exterior features a colorful mural celebrating Nixon’s history dating back to 1906, complete with a steam train, longhorns, and a portrait of one of the town’s founding figures. Inside, it’s a classic Texas gift shop. It’s also a great spot to pick up something for the folks back home without resorting to an airport gift shop.
Pioneer BBQ
Pioneer BBQ is Nixon’s answer to the question every Texan eventually asks: where’s the best brisket? The answer here is straightforward — smoked low and slow, served with classic sides like potato salad and beans in a no-frills, family-friendly setting. It’s a local favorite that has held its ground as a community staple, and the portions are generous enough that you’ll likely take leftovers home with you.
Nixon is a quick and easy day out, and River Acres is just down the road when you’re ready to head back.
