Nixon is about 20 miles east of River Acres — a small, unhurried Texas town of around 2,200 people with a small-town character. It’s not a destination that asks a lot of you, and that’s exactly the point. Come for a few hours, eat well, and poke around a town that takes its Texas roots seriously.

El Rodeo

El Rodeo is Nixon’s go-to for Tex-Mex, and it earns that reputation with straightforward, well-executed classics including enchiladas, fajitas, tacos, and cold margaritas served in a colorful, unpretentious dining room. The flour tortillas are made in-house and have developed their own following among regulars who make the drive specifically for them. It’s a local favorite that has held its ground as a community staple.

Main Drug Co. & Gift Shop

Main Drug Co. has been a Nixon institution since 1964, housed in one of the most striking historic brick buildings in town. The building itself is worth the stop — the exterior features a colorful mural celebrating Nixon’s history dating back to 1906, complete with a steam train, longhorns, and a portrait of one of the town’s founding figures. Inside, it’s a classic Texas gift shop. It’s also a great spot to pick up something for the folks back home without resorting to an airport gift shop.
